Natural Ruby (Manik)

A complete guide to ruby - benefits, who should wear it, quality, and how to wear it - plus certified ruby at trade prices from Zaveri Bazaar, Mumbai.

About Ruby

Ruby (Manik) is the red variety of the mineral corundum and one of the most powerful gemstones in Vedic astrology, representing the Sun. It is worn for confidence, status and vitality. Ruby is a vivid red, from rich crimson to the prized 'pigeon-blood' red.

Benefits of Ruby

In Vedic astrology, Ruby is worn to strengthen the Sun (Surya). It is traditionally believed to:

  • Boosts confidence, willpower and leadership
  • Supports career growth, authority and public recognition
  • Strengthens vitality, energy and overall health
  • Improves relationship with father and authority figures
  • Said to bring success to those in government, administration and leadership roles

Who Should Wear Ruby?

Ruby is most suited to Leo (Simha) ascendants, for whom the Sun rules the ascendant. Aries and Sagittarius natives may also benefit when the Sun is favourably placed. It is traditionally recommended for leaders, executives, doctors, administrators and entrepreneurs seeking recognition.

Ruling planet: the Sun (Surya)
Primary signs: Leo (Simha)
Also suitable: Aries and Sagittarius
Best worn on: Sunday morning

Ruby Quality: What to Look For

The single most important factor is colour - an even, vivid red commands the highest value, with Burmese 'pigeon-blood' rubies being the most prized. Look for good transparency and brightness, an attractive cut that maximises colour, and minimal eye-visible inclusions (fine 'silk' is natural and acceptable). Heat treatment is common in the trade; fully untreated rubies are rarer and more valuable.

How to Identify a Natural Ruby

Natural rubies almost always contain tiny inclusions; flawless, very cheap 'rubies' are usually glass or lab-created. Always insist on a certificate from a recognised lab (IGI / GIA / GRS) stating it is a natural ruby, and verify the certificate number with the lab. Every stone we supply can be provided with IGI / GIA / GRS certification on request.

How to Wear Ruby

Weight: 5 to 7 ratti (approx 4.5-6.5 carats) is common, but ideal weight should be decided by an astrologer based on your chart.
Metal: gold or copper
Finger: ring finger
Day & time: Sunday morning
Mantra: Om Ghrini Suryaya Namah (108 times)
Origins: Burma (Mogok), Mozambique, Madagascar and Thailand

Cleanse the ring in raw milk or Gangajal, wear it on the prescribed day and finger after chanting the mantra, ideally after consulting an astrologer.

Ruby Price Factors

Ruby prices depend mainly on colour, clarity, carat weight, origin and whether the stone is treated. A vivid, eye-clean, unheated Burmese ruby costs many times more than a treated commercial-grade stone of the same size. At The Gems Store we offer certified ruby at genuine trade prices, with stones sourced from Burma (Mogok), Mozambique, Madagascar and Thailand.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who should wear a Ruby?

Ruby suits Leo ascendants and those with a weak or well-placed Sun. It is favoured by people in leadership, government and public-facing roles. Consult an astrologer before wearing.

Is heated Ruby real?

Yes. Heat treatment is a widely accepted practice that improves colour and clarity. A heated ruby is still a natural ruby - it should simply be disclosed on the certificate. Untreated rubies are rarer and priced higher.

How many carats of Ruby should I wear?

Commonly 5-7 ratti (about 4.5-6.5 carats), but the right weight depends on your birth chart and should be confirmed by an astrologer.

How do I know my Ruby is genuine?

Buy only certified rubies (IGI/GIA/GRS), check for natural inclusions, and verify the certificate number with the issuing lab.
